    St. Paul’s AME Church

Further evidence for the existence of independent black churches in Apalachicola before the Civil War is found in an article written by Baptist minister Reverend Azor Van Hoose who visited Apalachicola in the winter of 1859. He wrote that at that time both the Methodists and the Baptists had “large colored church[es] with separate houses of worship.”

Many thanks go to Helen Sinclair for her assistance in compiling the narratives at this and several other stops on this tour.
